YONG IL PARK

ARTIST NOTE

What Park Yong-il has been painting for several years is a bundle (보따리). In past generations, a bundle was commonly used as a school bag, but as packaging material, the bundle is no longer as widespread. Things like plastic wraps and bags have replaced it. Objects that disappear from daily life often reappear in special contexts. Nowadays, bundles are used for "special" purposes, such as wrapping gift sets during holidays. However, the word "bundle" still remains in our daily language. For instance, university lecturers who have not yet settled are called "bundle peddlers," and when someone is expelled from an organization, they are told to "pack up your bundle." Park Yong-il’s paintings of bundles are an extension of his previous works, which focused on the lives of ordinary people in redevelopment areas around the metropolitan area where he lives and works.
